Tokyo Auto Otaku 2023 – Highlights of TAS2023: Liberty Walk’s F40 & FD RX-7

With so much hype surrounding this build days and weeks leading up to the main event, you could easily be mistaking TAS for the LB Works show!

Whilst Liberty Walk’s Kato-san is no stranger to controversy or internet-hate, taking a knife to what many of us consider one of Ferrari’s greatest creations could be taking things too far and understandably, opinions online have been rightly split. Whilst Liberty Walk did work on an F40 years ago, it mainly was a touch-and-go affair with light aesthetic additions that essentially left the car’s original lines intact. This time though, drill, dremel and power-saw, meet F40.

Personally, while the F40 reigns as one of my top 3 cars, I was still keen to see Kato-sans reinterpretation of this fabled machine.

I’m pretty sure you would have seen the images on your favourite social channels by now, so these images would be no surprise.

Like an IMSA car with extra pumped-up rear fenders, LB’s F40 does look rather mild by Liberty Walk standards and I don’t dislike it at all. It might not be to everyone’s taste but it was quite a tidy build, in its mostly white exterior, one could imagine LB’s F40 to be the automotive equivalent of a Mobile Suit Gundam!

With my media pass in hand, I was able to head inside to get some close-up shots.

I would have preferred if they kept it red and perhaps gone for a different choice of wheels. But, it is Kato-san’s car and he likes it and it makes him happy, so that’s what matters the most.

So… What do you think? Love it or loathe it?

With everyone crowded around the F40, Liberty Walk’s other showcase was in my opinion the more outrageous build and deserving of as much if not more attention as the F40. Like their ER34 Super Silhouette Skyline from back in 2020, this FD3S has taken plenty of design cues from the Super Silhouette racers of the 80s/90s.

Unlike the ER34 though, this RX-7 features plenty of curves and looks like it has received even more bodywork sculpting to achieve its looks. It is stunning.

I’m pretty sure if it was any other year, this RX-7 would have taken centre stage at the LB stand.
